Gibsonville woman pleads guilty to federal fraud charges

Gibsonville woman pleads guilty to federal fraud charges
A Gibsonville woman formerly employed at the SunTrust Bank branch in Burlington has pleaded guilty to federal charges of bank fraud and aggravated identity theft and will be sentenced in May.
As part of the plea arrangement, Crystal Thacker Wood of Ellen Drive in Gibsonville must repay the victims and will be sentenced to two years in prison, according to a plea agreement filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina. The judge will have the discretion to impose other penalties at the sentencing hearing, the document states.
Wood was indicted in December on four counts of bank fraud and four counts of aggravated identity theft. The indictment by a federal grand jury alleged she forged withdrawal slips, bank documents and a customer’s signature to steal $11,000 from an account at the bank, at 2178 N. Church St. between April 29 and Sept. 16. She was a teller at the bank.
Burlington police originally charged Wood with 18 counts of financial crimes in October.
Wood entered into a plea agreement Feb. 7 on one count of bank fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft but won’t be sentenced until May 23 in Winston-Salem, court records show. Federal District Court Judge Thomas D. Schroeder is scheduled to rule on the sentencing.
Wood pleaded guilty Feb. 9, court documents said. Assistant U.S.District Attorney Lynne Klauer said Wednesday the delay between a guilty plea and sentencing is routine in federal court.
